Cho-Hsin Su - Taiwan in East Asia: From Political and Cultural Perspectives

Following the previous talk on Taiwan in East Asia from an economic perspective, this talk brings in another two aspects where East Asia demonstrates great distinction from Europe. Different from Europe where a set of values are transnational and could solidify all nations, such as democracy and rule of law, East Asia does not embody such institutions or norms with regional characteristics, thus lacks a force of solidarity. On the political dimension in East Asia, the talk will present the special political dynamics in the region and highlight some hotspots where tension is at rise (e.g. Korean Peninsula, Taiwan Strait, etc.). Finally, we will discuss the cultural dimension where the cultural identity in East Asia and Taiwan’s cultural diplomacy will be mentioned.
